About Langford Park Rinks
The rinks at Langford Park are maintained primarily with a volunteer crew of neighbors and friends of the hockey program. The city of Saint Paul provides maintenance equipment and some help, but the majority of the effort is from nightly crews who clear and resurface the ice starting at 9am each night.
Once outdoor ice is ready at Langford Park (usually around the mid-December), practices for both groups are held outdoors from 6:30p to 7:30p usually on Tuesday or Wednesday nights. Again, depending on participant numbers, one of the age groups may switch their structured practice night to Wednesdays.
Playing outdoor hockey at Langford Park is a traditional part of our program and as documented by the Minnesota Historical Society, dates back to at least the late 1920's. Today, the outdoor ice reduces the need to purchase indoor practice ice, plays host our annual Winter Classic Squirt tournament and Mini-Mite Scramble, and helps build a community gathering spot for the surrounding neighborhoods. It's some of the best ice in the metro.

We try set up 5-7 person crews each night of the week. The more people that are there, the quicker we’re able to remove snow and start flooding. The more folks available to shovel after the sweeper pushes the snow to the boards, the less time the overall process takes. With a larger team, each night’s crew can still manage the process in the event someone needs to miss a shift.
You help by picking a night of the week that you can come to the Park and help remove snow and flood the rinks. We start right around 9:00pm. The process can take anywhere from 2-3 hours depending on how many folks are able to make it. We use shovels, an old-time sweeper and a new fancy sweeper courtesy of St. Paul Park & Rec to remove the snow and a good ol' fire hose to lay down fresh ice every night.
