Squirts Hockey
General Info
Squirts is the first level that looks like a real hockey. Games are full-ice and includes referees. Most players have played hockey before but some simply have experience skating. While this level is slightly more serious, it still focuses on fun and flexibility. Squirt coaches want the experience to be positive so players continue to play this wonderful game. Squirts are ages 8 to 10.
Practices
Squirts practices begin in October and ends in early March. There are typically 2 to 3 practices a week. Most indoor practices are 1/2 ice with another LP hockey team. When outdoor ice is available, practices will move to Langford Park.
Games
The Squirts play a District 1 schedule against metro area teams so travel is minimal. Games are full ice and include at least 1 referee. Wins and losses are reported and the season concludes with an end-of-season District 1 tournament. The Squirts have at least 2 tournaments in the season. We have travelled (about 1 hr) to New Richmond, WI the last few years for a weekend tourney in January. Some players commute each day, others stay in a motel. The Squirts also host the Winter Classic weekend tournament at Langford Park in January. They also, participate in the Edgecumbe tourney each year. This is also on a weekend.
Costs
Langford Park mini-mite program is the most affordable option in town. We try to keep costs low so families that are knew to hockey can give it a try.
Getting Oriented to Hockey
All players on the ice are expected to have all the necessary hockey equipment pictured here. This can be done inexpensively. First, check with Langford Park Rec center. They have a lot of donated equipment available for use. If you would like to purchase equipment, start with used. Go to Play it again Sports.
Starting August 1 2024, players competing in youth, girls, high school or junior hockey within USA Hockey are required to wear neck laceration protectors (NLPs) for all games and practices.
Mouth guards and jock/Jill straps are are optional for Mini-mites.
